SLCH Set for Busy February In the Community

Newburgh, NY –St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) has several community education and outreach opportunities on the calendar during the month of February, spanning a wide variety of services, events and locations.
On February 1, the hospital will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for Tri-State Bariatrics at SLCH’s Cornwall campus. The event is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Suite 240 of the Medical Office Building. It is an opportunity to meet and greet the staff of the SLCH Institute for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery team, including Dr. Wayne Weiss, Medical Director, Dr. Ramon Rivera, Dr. Jaime Cepeda and Jennie Drexler-Ferraioli, Director of Bariatric Services. The next day features an online opportunity to learn how to prepare an easy and healthy dish that would be great to share with friends while you watch the big game. Director of Food and Nutrition Marc Uhrik, a Culinary Institute of America trained chef, will demonstrate the recipe for pita pizzas at 3 p.m. on Thursday, February 2. To kick off Heart Month and to show its support of the American Heart Association, SLCH will be participating in national Wear Red Day on Friday, February 3. Companies, community organizations and individuals are encouraged to “Go Red” on that day to remind everyone of the importance of heart health and raise awareness about heart disease, the nation’s top cause of death for women.
In that same spirit, members of the SLCH Cardiovascular Institute and Cardiac Rehabilitation teams will be on hand at the Newburgh Mall’s Go Red for Women Heart Health Fair from 12-3 p.m. on Saturday, February 11. In addition to providing information about how to make heart healthy decisions, the hospital will also provide a free blood pressure screening.
Later that evening, St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital will be represented as the presenting sponsor of the Army West Point House of Blues hockey game to promote prostate cancer awareness at Tate Rink. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m., but members of the SLCH urology team will be available to provide information and answer questions beginning when the arena doors open at 6 p.m.
SLCH will present another online learning opportunity on Wednesday, February 15 at 6 p.m. when Dr. Jeffrey Degen, Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery, will host a live chat. Dr. Degen will answer questions about the common causes and treatment of back pain. On February 23, Brian Reade, DPM, will visit with a group at the Monroe Senior Center to discuss common foot issues that can affect seniors. The Monroe Senior Center is open to residents of the Town of Monroe (proof of residency required) that are at least 60 years of age. The month’s activities wrap up on February 25 when the hospital returns to West Point for the Women in Sports Festival Members of the Littman Cancer Center staff will be on hand to provide prevention and anti-smoking information to the girls participating in the clinic prior to the Black Knights’ women’s basketball game.
