SLCH Reinforces Universal Precautions with Staff and Visitors with Regard to Current Concerns Surrounding the Ebola Virus

Newburgh, NY – St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) consistent with its current practices of universal precautions, has proactively put several additional measures into place to prepare staff on the proper protocol should they encounter a patient who is screened and suspected to have the Ebola virus.

SLCH performed a drill with a mock Ebola patient earlier this week to test the Hospital's, specifically the Emergency Department's response on identifying and isolating patients whom are suspected of having exposure and symptoms consistent with the Ebola virus. Hospital officials are working with several agencies, including our Local County Health Department, NYS DOH and the CDC to ensure that all guidelines are met.

"The safety of our patients, staff, and the community is our number one priority," said Robert S. Ross, SLCH President and CEO. "We are working with our entire team on a daily basis to ensure safety. We will continue to follow protocols mandated by the DOH, and train our staff as more information is released."

In addition to following universal precautions, SLCH has built questions into its Electronic Health Record surrounding travel and exposure.  Signage has also been placed in the SLCH Emergency Department and registration areas.

"Our entire medical staff has been informed of these precautionary measures," said Dr. Christine Jelalian, SLCH Medical Director. "We will continue to work with caregivers to provide education and resources regarding the precaution and treatment of this disease."
