Newburgh, NY – St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) received a generous donation from the Newburgh Free Academy (NFA) girls volleyball team as part of a new initiative focused on giving back to the community.

The inaugural Charity Night, benefiting St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital's Littman Cancer Center was held on October 15 at NFA's main campus. The team presented SLCH officials with a check for $1,000 to support the Cancer Center, in recognition of the hospitals high quality care and dedication to the community.

"SLCH is incredibly thankful for this donation," said Robert S. Ross, SLCH President and CEO. "We are honored to be chosen as the benefactor of this wonderful cause."

First-year Athletic Director Jason Semo has created an exceptional program for the school's athletes, encouraging them to not only excel in competition but also give new meaning to what it means to be a Goldback. Sue Barr, NFA Junior Varsity Volleyball coach led the team's fundraising efforts.

"As our first charity event, we chose to stay local and work for an entity that supports the community wholeheartedly," said Semo. "St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital and The Littman Cancer Center were an obvious choice."

The donation was made in memory of the late Lawrence T. Diorio. Mr. Diorio led the effort to form the "Lawrence T. Diorio Training Academy," a program started in 1989 that offers training to laborers in the community.  At the event, Semo made note of Mr. Diorio's dedication to education and equality.
