Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Among Top 5 Percent in the Nation for Clinical Outcomes According to Healthgrades

Newburgh, NY (February 9, 2021) – Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC), a nationally-recognized provider of health care, achieved the 2021 America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award™, as announced today by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems.

The distinction places MSLC among the top 5% of nearly 4,500 hospitals assessed nationwide for its consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades. This year will mark MSLC’s second consecutive year achieving the 250 Best Hospitals Award.
“This award is reflective of the incredible work and commitment from the MSLC health care heroes who serve our community each and every day,” said Joan Cusack-McGuirk, MSLC’s Chief Executive Officer. “Each and every member of the team continues to not only rise to the occasion but strive to always excel in patient care and customer service. We are incredibly proud to receive this recognition for the second year in a row.”

Recipients of the Healthgrades America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2021 study period (2017 through 2019), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures — as measured by objective performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications). “COVID-19 has profoundly changed the delivery of healthcare but what is unchanged is the importance of high-quality care. Those hospitals that achieved the America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award have exhibited a long-standing commitment to quality and superior clinical outcomes, which differentiates them from other healthcare organizations. We applaud their ongoing efforts,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. In the 2021 model year, patients treated in hospitals achieving the award had, on average, a 27 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award, as measured across 19 rated conditions and procedures for which mortality is the outcome.* And during that same period, if all hospitals performed similarly to those achieving the Healthgrades America's 250 Best Hospitals Award, nearly 165,000 Medicare lives could potentially have been saved.

Throughout 2020, MSLC received considerable recognition. In September, MSLC achieved Magnet® Recognition, which is the nation’s highest honor for nursing excellence and is a direct reflection of nursing professionalism, teamwork, and collaboration in patient care. That same month, MSLC was designated as a Great Place to Work-Certified™ company for the fourth year in a row, joining only 13 other hospitals in the nation who achieved this recognition. Additionally, The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) announced that Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall earned 2020 CHIME Digital Health Most Wired recognition as a certified level 7 for the sixth time, as a testament to the organization’s information technology infrastructure.
