SLCH Celebrates Men's Health Month

Newburgh, NY – June is National Men’s Health Month, and to celebrate, St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) has developed a robust schedule of community education. The month, started in 1996, was created to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.

In that spirit, SLCH and the Moulton Baptist Church in Newburgh, NY have partnered to present a Men’s Health & Wellness Day on June 9. The day-long event runs from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. and will take place at the church, located at 54 Old Little Britain Road. Free and open to the public, the day will include health and wellness information, free presentations, and community vendors. Seminars include Prostate Cancer Screening & Treatment (10 a.m.), Preventing Avoidable Health Problems (11 a.m.), Opioids and Medication Management (1 p.m.), and Cardiovascular Health (2 p.m.). No registration is required.

On June 13, Dr. Jaspreet Singh, Co-Chair of SLCH Urology Services, will provide a free prostate cancer screening, including a physical exam and PSA blood test, from 3-5 p.m., at the Littman Cancer Center at SLCH’s Cornwall campus. On Friday, June 15, Dr. Singh is teaming up with Dr. Manita Sawhney, a primary care physician with the St. Luke’s Cornwall Medical Group, for a free Men’s Health Lunch and Learn at SLCH’s Newburgh campus. Lunch will be provided at 11:45 a.m., and the presentation will start at noon. The duo will discuss the importance of seeing a physician regularly to discuss prevention strategies and identify issues, including prostate cancer, in their early stages. Dr. Praneeth Vemulapalli, Co-Chair of SLCH Urology Services, rounds out the Men’s Health Month schedule on Tuesday, June 26 with a free about the variety of treatment methods for enlarged prostate, including laser therapy. Laser therapy is a minimally invasive treatment that may provide fast relief from enlarged prostate symptoms. The event will begin at 6 p.m. at the Hyatt House in Fishkill, NY.
