May Community Outreach Activities

Newburgh, NY – St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) will again be active in the Hudson Valley community with a full complement of presentations, health fairs and community events covering a wide range of topics and issues slated for the month of May.

The first event of the month takes place Saturday, May 6 when the Department of Orthopedics will represent the hospital at the Army West Point men’s lacrosse game versus Notre Dame. Dr. Brian Reade will be available during the Black Knights Alley fan festival beginning at 12:30 p.m. to discuss common foot and ankle problems. Face-off between the Black Knights and Fighting Irish is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

SLCH will unveil its newest addition on Tuesday, May 9 with the official ribbon cutting of the St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital Fishkill Sleep Center. The new location, will operate in conjunction with the Sleep Center at the Cornwall campus, is located at 400 Westage Business Center Drive, Suite 212. The inaugural Littman Cancer Center Education Series begins on Wednesday, May 10 at 6 p.m. Dr. Umangi Patel, who is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology, will discuss the risk factors, symptoms and treatment of breast cancer. The series also includes seminars on lung cancer by Dr. Marc Rappaport (June 8) and colon cancer by Dr. Fauzia Paracha (July 19). SLCH is back in Cornwall on Tuesday, May 16 for the latest in its series of lectures at the Cornwall Public Library. Dr. Margarita Kogan of the SLC Medical Group will present a free seminar on the prevention, symptoms and treatment of Lyme Disease. Dr. Kogan’s program will begin at 1 p.m.

Thursday, May 18 is the busiest day of the month with three events on the docket. The Littman Cancer Center and the SLCH Cardiovascular Institute will represent the hospital at the annual ShopRite Health Fair at the store’s Vails Gate location from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Shoppers can stop by to get a free blood pressure screening, as well as learn about cancer prevention and community resources.

On the Newburgh campus, Dr, Yu-Kuan Lin, a member of SLCH’s urology services, will give a free lecture on preventing kidney stones through better nutrition. Dr. Jeffrey Degen, SLCH Chief of Neurosurgical Services, will also give a free presentation at 6:30 p.m. on May 18. Dr. Degen will discuss the treatment and prevention of several common back issues at the Comfort Inn & Suites in Goshen, N.Y. The schedule resumes Friday, May 19 when Dr. Uticia Belfield of the SLC Medical Group speaks to the Town of Newburgh seniors about Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia and memory loss during the natural aging process. It is the second in SLCH’s five-part lunch and learn series with the group.

The hospital will once again support the annual Melissa Fund Sun Run on Saturday, May 20. The yearly race supports the Melissa K. Bambino Melanoma Foundation, which was established by Melissa’s family and friends to honor her memory. The Littman Cancer Center will be on hand during registration and after the race to provide prevention and service information.

The robust orthopedics education schedule continues Tuesday, May 23 when Dr. Kenneth Rauschenbach will provide a free educational seminar on arthritis of the hip, knee and shoulder, including the range of treatment options. The final educational seminar of the month is scheduled for Thursday, May 25 at Glen Arden Continuing Care Retirement Community. The latest in the Dinner with the Doctor series will feature Dr. Mehul Patel, Medical Director of the SLCH Cardiovascular Institute. The presentation, The Truth About A-Fib, will be preceded by a free buffet dinner at 6 p.m. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Glen Arden (845) 360-1469.

The month’s activities conclude on Wednesday, May 31 at the annual Orange County Senior Health and Fitness Day. The hospital will be providing a free blood pressure check as well as a written diabetes screening tool for those in attendance at Thomas Bull Memorial Park from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
