SLCH Teams With Newburgh Rotary And Salvation Army For "Cold Feet/Warm Socks" Initiative

Newburgh, NY – St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH), the Newburgh Rotary Club and the Salvation Army Newburgh Corps recently implemented the “Cold Feet/Warm Socks” project to assist city residents in need of footwear.

Patients utilizing SLCH’s ambulatory surgery services are given the option to donate the pair of non-slip socks provided by the hospital during their procedure. Members of the Newburgh Rotary Club pick up the donations weekly for delivery to the Salvation Army on Van Ness Street where they are laundered, sorted and distributed to those in need. In addition, health and wellness education materials prepared by the hospital are distributed with each pair of socks.

“We are proud to partner with the Rotary Club and Salvation Army on this important project,” Tracey Horan, Director of Orthopedics Service Line and the hospital’s clinical liaison to the initiative, said. “This is a great example of organizations working together to really benefit the communities they serve.”

The idea for the project was presented by Rotarian Jim Bufalo after he was issued a pair of socks during a recent medical procedure. He launched the project with the medical facility and Salvation Army in Middletown, and has now expanded the community service initiative to benefit the citizens of Newburgh.

“I was really inspired by my own experience,” Bufalo said. “As Rotarians, we are always looking for ways to help and serve our community, and this seemed like a simple, yet very effective, way to do that.”

The Newburgh Rotary Club was established in 1917, and has remained committed to its mission of, “Service above self.” In the nearly 100 years since its inception, local Rotarians have volunteered in countless ways to benefit the City of Newburgh.
