Meet Our Orthopedic Specialists

The Orthopedics Department at Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall is dedicated to providing for the comprehensive orthopedic needs of the Hudson Valley, including sports medicine, arthritis, joint replacement, and other joint related issues, in addition to spine, hand and bone issues as well as Trauma surgery. In conjunction with primary care and orthopedic physicians, the MSLC Orthopedics Community uses a team approach to diagnose, treat and alleviate joint pain.

Restoring quality of life for residents of the Hudson Valley region is the goal.


Esteban CuartasEsteban Cuartas, M.D.

After graduating from Dartmouth College with high honors in Cell and Molecular Biology, Dr. Cuartas returned home to attend a prestigious 6-year medical school in South America. He then went on to complete a general surgery internship at the Yale School of Medicine. He finished his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Miami. Finally, before joining Orthopedics & Sports Medicine., Dr. Cuartas completed a Fellowship in Spinal Surgery at the Spine Institute of New York at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan.

Dr. Cuartas has been involved extensively in Orthopedic research. He completed a two-year NIH-funded Research Fellowship in Osteoporosis while at the Yale School of Medicine. His research unraveled some of the cell signals that cause osteoporosis and was published in several scientific journals. His studies also examined the interaction of osteoporosis medications and bone injuries.

Dr. Cuartas specializes in both surgical and non-surgical care of the spine, and acute as well as chronic disorders. This includes the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions. His interests also include cervical disc herniations, lumbar stenosis and spondylolisthesis, as well as teenage and adult scoliosis. He has presented papers/posters in Vienna, Miami, New York, Las Vegas and San Francisco in these areas. His most recent article on the treatment of Scoliosis was published in theJournal of the American Orthopaedic Society.

Gina Del SavioGina Del Savio, M.D.

Dr. Del Savio attended the University of Vermont College of Medicine after graduating from Brown University. She completed her Residency in Orthopedic Surgery at New York Medical College’s Westchester and NYC campuses.

Dr. Del Savio then completed a Fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center before establishing Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Orange County with Dr. Hyman in 1996.

Her special interests include repetitive disorders, trauma and degenerative conditions of the hand, wrist and elbow. Dr. Del Savio is published in American Orthopedic and Related Research and has a chapter on congenital hand deformities in the textbook Principles of Orthopedics. She has presented papers at national Orthopedic and Hand Society meetings.

Dr. Del Savio’s tenure at the University of Vermont College of Medicine influenced her decision to raise her family in a more rural environment here in Orange County. Coming from a family of educators, Dr. Del Savio encourages patient education in order to enable patients to participate in the health care decision-making process. She firmly believes that patient-physician cooperation is critical for satisfactory recovery.

Dr. Del Savio is Board Certified in both Orthopedic Surgery and Hand Surgery with membership in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH). She has also been a member of the American College of Physician Executives since 2012. Dr. Del Savio has been an active member of the Medical Executive Committee at Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall (MSLC) since 2001 and in addition to her role as surgeon, she serves as Chief Medical Officer of MSLC.

Dr. Del Savio is committed to the advancement of the practice of medicine in Orange County and is committed to professional development for herself and other Orange County physicians and surgeons. She is a long time member and past President of the Orange County Medical Society, as well as past President of the Medical Society's House of Delegates for district 6 -- advocating for the Orange County Medical Community, staff and patients.

Matthew GordonMatthew Gordon, M.D.

Dr. Gordon specializes in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery, and his clinical interests include minimally-invasive surgery of the hip, knee, shoulder and elbow, as well as treating sports medicine conditions. He joined Crystal Run Heathcare in 2016 after a stint at OrthoCare Specialists in Bridgeport, CT.

Dr. Gordon received his M.D. from SUNY Update Medical University in Syracuse before completing his residence in orthopedic surgery at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn. He also completed fellowship training in sports medicine at the Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics Center in Ohio. He holds a bachelor's degree in biology from SUNY Geneseo and an M.S. in marine biology from the University of Maine.

Berry HymanBarry Hyman, M.D.

Dr. Hyman attended Columbia University where he earned a B.A. in Music/Pre Med, Masters’ Degrees in Physical Education and Education and his Doctorate in Science Education. He went on to graduate from Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons where he received the New York Orthopedic Hospital Award.

Dr. Hyman completed his Orthopedic Residency at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and his fellowship in Sports Medicine Orthopedic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University.

A lifelong passion for sports and the arts fostered Dr. Hyman’s interest in Orthopedics. He holds a 4th degree black belt in Judo, and is a former NY State Champion and Empire State Games Gold Medalist, and he swam and played water polo for Columbia University. He was the Head Judo Coach for Columbia, Princeton, and Yale Universities and has taught judo at West Point.

Dr Hyman is Team physician for The Hudson Valley Renegades, and Wallkill High School. He has assisted the Team Physician for the Baltimore Orioles.

Musically, Dr. Hyman is an accomplished cellist, and has played as a member of the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra. Before coming to Orange County he practiced in Connecticut and taught at Yale University where he helped develop a Performing Arts Medicine Program.

Clinically, Dr. Hyman’s interests are in injuries of the knee and shoulder and he is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the Arthroscopy Association of North America and served as the Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall. Dr. Hyman is proud to continue his commitment to the community as an Orthopedic Surgeon, now as a member of the Middletown Medical team of medical professionals.

After graduating from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1993, Dr. McLaughlin completed his Orthopedic Residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. He went on to complete a Total Joint/Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio


Dr. McLaughlin is the Medical Director of the St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital Center for Joint Replacement. He specializes in the treatment of arthritis of the knee, hip and shoulder (including total joint replacement), sports medicine (including arthroscopy and ligament reconstruction) as well as fracture management. Dr. McLaughlin's practice philosophy is to maximize non-surgical treatment prior to considering surgery. When surgery is necessary, minimally invasive techniques are preferred.

Dr. McLaughlin has authored and co-authored several articles in peer-reviewed orthopedic journals including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal of Shoulder Surgery.

Enrique SanzEnrique Sanz, M.D.

Dr. Enrique Sanz was medically trained at Puerto Rico's UCC and later completed an internship at Cabrini Medical Center, an affiliate of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

He did his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at New York University School of Medicine. There, he rotated between The Rusk Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine, Bellevue Hospital, The Hospital for Joint Disease, and both the Manhattan and Brooklyn VA hospitals.

During his residency, Dr. Sanz presented a case report at the American Congress of Rehabilitation medicine (ACRM) in Tucson, Arizona.

After residency training, Dr. Sanz pursued additional training in the subspecialty of Pain Management at Westchester Medical Center and at Sound Shore Medical Center, an affiliate of New York Medical College.

Dr. Sanz is currently Board Certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is currently Board eligible by the American Board of Anesthesiology for completing an accredited fellowship in the area of Pain Management.

Dr. Sanz practices physical medicine and the treatment of spinal disorders. He performs acute and chronic pain management, electrodiagnostic studies, epidural injections, sacroiliac injections and spinal facet joint injections.

John M. UhorchakJohn M. Uhorchak, M.D.

Dr. Uhorchak is a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point, and Albany Medical College. After residency atWilliam Beaumont Army Medical Center, he completed the John A. Feagin Sports Medicine Fellowship at Keller Army Community Hospital.

Dr. Uhorchak was on staff at Keller for the last 12 years of his 28 year US Army career serving as Chief of Orthopedics and Chief of the Department of Surgery. At West Point, he served as Team Physician or Assistant Team Physician for many Division I and numerous intramural sports teams.

At Keller Army Hospital, Dr. Uhorchak was actively engaged in clinical research, presenting numerous papers and authoring/co-authoring dozens of peer reviewed articles. He was lead author on the study “Risk Factors Associated with Non Contact ACL injuries: A Four-Year Prospective Analysis of 859 West Point Cadets,“ which received the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine's (AOSSM)2002 O’Donoghue Excellence in Sports Injury Research Award and the American Journal of Sports Medicine Best Publication Hughston Award for 2004.

Dr. Uhorchak treated soldiers in war zones in Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq. He earned numerous military awards including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Medical Badge, Ranger Tab, and Parachute Badge. He was recognized as being among the top medical personnel in the Army, receiving the US Army Surgeon Generals “A” designator and the Order of Medical Merit.

He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in Orthopedic Surgery since 1994 and one of the few in the Hudson Valley whom is sub-specialty certified in Orthopedic Sports Medicine and has a strong interest in knee, shoulder, and arthroscopic surgery. Dr. Uhorchak is also a reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Krystle PohlKrystle Pohl, PA-C, ATC

Medical School: Pace University

After earning her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training/Exercise Science from Ithaca College Krystle worked in the Hudson Valley as an athletic trainer in sports medicine. She has held positions at the State University of New York’s College at New Paltz and with several sports camps at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Krystle’s connections with the Orthopedics & Sports Medicine family began when she was a young athlete. She was a competitive gymnast locally and a graduate of Valley Central High School. Her interest in sports led to her goals of becoming an orthopedic physician assistant.

Early on in her career, she established a professional relationship with the Orthopedics & Sports Medicine team as an athletic trainer and then later as a medical assistant. She left to continue her studies and eventually attend Pace University Lenox Hill Hospital’s Physician Assistant Program.

Krystle represented her peers as class president and was also an active member of the Student Academy of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. She graduated with her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies and earned the Physician Assistant Leadership Award.

Krystle is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the New York State Society of Physician Assistants, and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.


Courtney Tosi, RPA-C, ATC

Medical School: King's College

Courtney received a Master of Science in Exercise Science from East Stroudsburg University and a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from King’s College. Prior to joining Orthopedic Associates, she was an Orthopedic Trauma Physician Assistant at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
