Receiving Magnet recognition for the second time is a great achievement for MSLC as it continues to proudly belong to the global Magnet community – a small, select group of domestic health care organizations and hospitals in the U.S.

“Being named a Magnet® organization reflects Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall’s unwavering commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery,” said Daniel Maughan. “This prestigious recognition—one of the highest honors in nursing—also represents the collective dedication, compassion, and collaboration of our entire hospital team. Being named a Magnet® organization reflects Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall’s unwavering commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery,” said Margaret Allers, Senior Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer, and Chief Operating Officer. “This prestigious recognition—one of the highest honors in nursing—also represents the collective dedication, compassion, and collaboration of our entire hospital team.”

To achieve initial Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands widespread participation from leadership and staff. This process includes an electronic application, written patient care documentation, an on-site visit, and a review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition.

Health care organizations must reapply for Magnet recognition every four years based on adherence to Five Magnet components and 82 magnet standards that demonstrate excellence in patient care and clinical outcomes. An organization reapplying for Magnet recognition must provide documented evidence to demonstrate how staff members sustained and improved Magnet concepts, performance and quality over the four-year period since the organization received its 2020 recognition. MSLC not only demonstrated high quality care and outcomes, but also received recognition of nine exemplars for their clinical outcomes where the organization outperformed the national benchmark for the majority of eight consecutive quarters on 100% of the inpatient units.

“We’re a better organization today because of the Magnet recognition we first achieved four years ago,” said Allers. “Magnet recognition raised the bar for patient care and inspired every member of our team to achieve excellence every day. It is this commitment to providing our community with high-quality care that helped us become a Magnet-recognized organization, and it’s why we continue to pursue and maintain our Magnet designation”
