Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Offers Women & Heart Disease Seminar

Events

Cornwall, New York – February 9, 2024 - Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC) announced today that it is holding a free seminar on Women and Heart Disease at the Cornwall Public Library on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 12:00 pm. Dr. Nirav Shah will share vital information on how heart attack symptoms present differently in women during a one hour seminar. Attendees may attend in person or view the presentation virtually.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for American women, with 60 million women living with some form of heart disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 44% of women have high blood pressure, a leading risk factor for heart disease. In his seminar, Dr. Shah, Medical Director of MSLC’s Cardiovascular Institute, will explain the differences in how cardiovascular disease presents in women, steps women can take to reduce their risk, which blood tests can serve as warning signs, and what to do if a woman is experiencing symptoms.

This Women and Heart Disease falls on the day after the nineteenth anniversary of MSLC’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab, opened in 2005, fittingly, on Valentine’s Day. The Cardiac Catheterization Lab can provide swift relief from cardiovascular issues and has saved hundreds of lives since its founding. MSLC reaffirmed its commitment to treating heart disease with the completed expansion of the Kaplan Family Center for Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Radiology (CVIR) in 2023.

“Although heart disease is often associated with men, it's crucial to recognize that it's the leading cause of death in women in America. Women may present with atypical symptoms, making early detection and intervention essential for optimal outcomes,” said Dr. Shah. “Most cardiac events are preventable, and with proper screenings and follow-up care, it is within our power to change those statistics.” Dr. Shah welcomes opportunities, like this free seminar, to educate women about their risk for heart disease and empower them to make healthy lifestyle choices.

MSLC’s Women and Heart Disease educational seminar will take place at the Cornwall Public Library at 395 Hudson Street in Cornwall on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 12:00 pm. Interested guests may register online at bit.ly/MSLCHeartmonth2024. Light refreshments will be provided.
