The Effective Communication and Cultural Competence Initiative is providing the means to make the Hospital more accessible, welcoming and more inviting for all patients and families, whatever their linguistic, cultural, dietary or spiritual needs. The initiative coordinates and unifies many ongoing division-specific projects and programs working toward a more culturally competent workplace. It also provides institution-wide training and education. Signs are posted at hospital entrances in multiple languages to let the foreign language or deaf patient know that interpreter services are available free of charge.

  • 24/7 over the phone interpreter services, free of charge
  • Speed dial *0100 to access interpreter service from any phone in the building
  • Interpreter conferencing to make outbound calls
  • Portable and dual handset interpreter phones

  • Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services
  • 24/7 professional sign language interpreters, free of charge
  • Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD/TTY)
  • New York Relay Service, 800-421-1220, free service used to connect to the patient or family member who uses a TDD/TTY
  • Special phones that blink when the phone rings for the hard of hearing
  • Closed Caption TV

Our Nutrition Services are also prepared to create meals that accommodate various cultural and dietary needs of those we serve. Delivering care to patients and families in a culturally effective manner benefits everyone. It increases patient satisfaction, patient safety, and patient adherence and may improve patient health outcomes.

Drug-Free and Alcohol-Free Workplace

Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall is committed to maintaining a drug- and alcohol-free workplace and expects all staff to arrive and remain free of the influence of alcohol and drugs while they are on the job. Staff is specifically prohibited from working while “under the influence” or from the use, purchase, possession, sale, theft, distribution, diversion or transfer of alcohol or illegal drugs on hospital grounds or property or in any vehicle or equipment owned or operated by the Hospital. All employees selected for employment will be subjected to an extensive background check.

Tobacco-Free Campus

Because of our concerns for the health of our patients, staff and visitors, all MSLC sites are 100% tobacco-free. Tobacco products of any type (including chewing tobacco, cigars, pipes, cigarettes) are prohibited at all times inside any facility wholly owned and/or operated by the Hospital, inside any company vehicle and outside on any hospital property.

Employee Recognition

Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall (MSLC), in appreciation and recognition of the hard work and dedication of our employees, provides numerous appreciation and recognition events throughout the year. We also have a formal recognition program to recognize those employees who practice our Stellar Service Standards on a daily basis and go above and beyond the every day function of their job when it comes to customer service. There are different levels of recognition, which include our Catch a Star program.
